For one of my classes, 'Product Design Methods,' we were tasked with finding a product to improve. My group, a team of 4 product design undergraduate students, decided on HBOMax, specifically the iOS app which was notorious to have an unorganized user journey.
Our main goals were to:
1. Provide accessibility to necessary features (primarily series episodes)
2. Enhance the search experience to be more personalized
3. Making a more user friendly & informative interface
OVERVIEW ---
We wanted to focus on new onboarding users that were unfamiliar with the iOS app. With this user in mind, we came up with 3 simple tasks that were foundational to the app experience:
1. Selecting an episode within a series
2. Adding a movie/show to your list
3. Finding a specific genre of media using the search feature
This was the high-level design process:
PROCESS ---
For the initial user testing sessions, we recruited 2 individuals -- one with no previous HBOMax usage and one with very limited exposure to HBOMax. We based the testing session off of a Task Analysis flow on the three tasks. The main takeaways were that users found it hard to remember which buttons did what and got confused because there were many holes in the user journey to get to 'Episodes.'
USER TESTING ---
Here are some of the solutions we ideated after the testing session:
IDEATION ---
After a second round of feedback received through paper prototypes and heuristic evaluations, we were able to compile a list of potential feature additions and enhancements. We then prioritized this list to choose which features we were going to implement.
DESIGN CHANGES ---
Here is the final prototype, specifically highlighting the experience for Task 1 as compared to what it was before:
